Advancements in Dermatology and Skin Speaks Spa M.D. are owned and supervised by Patrick S. Carney, M.D., fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeon and board certified dermatologist, and "Top Doc" by Mpls/St.Paul magazine.
Dr. Carney graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Southern Methodist University in 1976. He completed his medical training at the University of Texas in Dallas and pursued a career initially in emergency medicine for three years.
Dr. Carney completed his residency at the Case Residency Reserve in Cleveland Ohio and subsequently moved to Minnesota where he completed a Fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery in 1987.
Dr. Carney belongs to the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
With over 20 years of skin care expertise, Dr. Patrick S. Carney offers 6 full-service Advancements In Dermatology clinics throughout the Twin Cities.
Dr. Carney introduced the Twin Cities' to his premiere medical spa, Skin Speaks Spa M.D., in 2003.
 
Dr. J. Michael Carney, M.D
Dr. Carney is board certified in dermatology and fellowship trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a specialized method of treating skin cancer. Utilizing Mohs surgery, Dr. Carney can achieve the highest cure rate while saving the maximum amount of normal skin. He has been performing Mohs surgery for 22 years, since his fellowship in 1984.
Dr. Carney graduated Magna Cum Laude from Duke University. His twelve years of formal medical training began at Northwestern University, where he received the highest honors, Alpha Omega Alpha. He followed this with a General Surgery internship in Michigan and a three-year Dermatology residency in Cleveland. He extended his training with four fellowships: Laser Surgery at Harvard Medical School; Mohs Micrographic Surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical School; and two fellowships in Cosmetic Surgery in Arkansas.
He enjoys lecturing and teaching, and divides his time between private practice in Little Rock, Arkansas and his Mohs practice with Advancements in Dermatology in Edina.
Dr. Kelly Jerstad, MD
Dr. Jerstad graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine, Alpha Omega Alpha. She interned at Northwestern University, in Illinois and had a four year Dermatology residency at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Jerstad extended her training by obtaining a Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery with a procedural emphasis on ablative and nonablative laser techniques; use of vascular, pigment and hair removal lasers; chemical peels; liposuction, sclerotherapy; Botox; Fat Transfer; and filler substances.
Dr. Jerstad is board certified in dermatology and splits her time between a group practice where she is a partner in South Dakota and her Mohs practice with Advancements in Dermatology in Edina.
Jacalyn J. Beiler, MPAS, PA-C, Certified Physician Assistant, has been with Advancements in Dermatology since early 2007. She earned her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from Chicago Medical School, Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago, IL in 2005.
She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota, Duluth with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Mathematics graduating Cum Laude as well as University and Departmental Honors. She spent one of her undergraduate years studying at the University of Birmingham in Birmingham, England.
Jacalyn is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants; She is licensed by the Minnesota State Medical Board and an active member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants.

Gayle Hanson, PA-C, Certified Physician Assistant, is a certified Physician Assistant who received her undergraduate degree in Education from Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN. She has completed her RN degree and worked in nursing for 4 years before returning to school for her degree as a Physician Assistant. Her Physician Assistant training was completed at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Gayle is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, with honors. She is licensed by the Minnesota State Board of Medical Practice and is a member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants. She is also a member of the Minnesota Association of Physician Assistants.
She has practiced ten years in Family Practice Medicine and worked in the Urgent Care setting prior to entering the field of dermatology. She has 11 years of experience at Advancements in Dermatology and is interested in general dermatology for all ages.

Kathy Larson PA-C, is a Certified Physician Assistant. She received her Graduate Training in Physician Assistant studies from the Weill Medical College of Cornell University at the New York Presbyterian Hospital in 2000. She also had the opportunity to do an elective dermatology rotation at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
She earned her undergraduate degree from Saint Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Arts in Biology in 1996.

Angela L. Rohland, C-FNP, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2004 with honors, earning her Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing. Her past nursing experience includes five years in women’s health, pediatrics, and internal medicine.
Angela earned her master’s degree from Metropolitan State University, where she obtained widespread training in pediatrics, adult, and family medicine. During her studies, she completed an elective rotation in dermatology while focusing her graduate research on skin cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment of malignant melanoma, and anti-aging management.
In addition to her education and dermatological rotations, Angela completed a sixteen week, extensive training program alongside of Dr. Patrick Carney.
Angela is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and is licensed by the Minnesota State Board of Nursing. Larry Weidell, PA-C, Certified Physician Assistant, graduated with honors from Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2001. As a student, Larry was actively involved in the John Kerbs PA Student Society and served as an elected class representative to the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. In 2001, Larry was awarded the Nebraska PA Foundation Scholarship.
Since becoming a PA, Larry continues to be consistently involved in the PA profession. From 2001 to 2007, he was a Scholarship Selection Committee member for the PA Foundation, the philanthropic division of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Larry is an active fellow member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants.

Heather Wencel MPAS, PA-C is a Certified Physician Assistant who joined Advancements in Dermatology in August of 2009. She attended University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Wellness in 2007. Heather continued her education at Des Moines University where she completed a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies in June, 2009.
Heather’s strong interest and passion for dermatology was encouraged during her clinical rotation with Dr. Carney, confirming the direction she would take her future. Heather’s skill and knowledge was equally impressive to Dr. Carney. Heather now joins Advancements in Dermatology staff with continued training under Dr. Carney.
Heather is now seeing patients, and looks forward to ongoing training in both medical and cosmetic aspects of dermatology.

Jennifer Aguilar, RN
Jennifer received an Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Assisting and Medical Office Management in 1998 and moved from Grand Island, Nebraska in 1999 working as a Medical Assistant. She furthered her education and later graduated from the College of St. Catherine with an Associate of Science degree in Nursing in 2006.
Jennifer joins Advancements in Dermatology as a Registered Nurse with 10 years of experience in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. Jennifer independently serves as one of our Nurse Injectors and an Occupational Safety Health Officer within our organization.
In addition, she utilizes her nursing skills and knowledge as she assists our healthcare providers with various procedures, educates and guides patients with specific skin care needs and performs many cosmetic procedures using some of the latest technologies that improve the quality, health and restore youthfulness in our skin.
As a Nurse Injector with advanced training in Botox and multiple dermal fillers, she is also skilled in lasers and skin rejuvenation treatments of multiple types.
Jennifer attends educational courses and seminars to continually further her skills and competency in the latest esthetic treatments and advancements in technology.
Jennifer is licensed by the Minnesota State Board of Nursing, an active member of the American Nurses Association (ANA) & Dermatology Nurses Association (DNA).

Ann-Marie Orth is a Registered Nurse with a baccalaureate in Science in Nursing from the University of Minnesota. She began her career as a medical surgical nurse on a cardiac/stroke step down unit at United Hospital in St. Paul. She joined Advancements in Dermatology and Skin Speaks Spa M.D. in July of 2007, eager to combine her medical skills and her passion for aesthetic medicine.
Ann Marie is part of our medical surgery team, assisting our surgeons in skin cancer (Mohs) surgery several days a week. Her independent role within our clinic is to provide cosmetic services. She is a skilled and qualified provider of Botox injections, dermal fillers, and a cosmetic consultant of the aesthetic services we offer.
Ann-Marie is licensed by the Minnesota State Board of Nursing and is an active member of the Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA), and the Association for Medical Esthetic Nurses (AMEN), a recognized nursing affiliate of the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.
Ann-Marie is very active and accomplished in pursuing advanced trainings for Botox and dermal fillers provided by AAI (Aesthetic Advancements Inc.), Bioform medical , Artes Medical, and Allergan, consistently expanding and perfecting her treatment techniques.
Yone Tierney, RN, B.S.N., B.A.
Yone Tierney, RN, originally trained at the groundbreaking Skinklinic in Manhattan as one of the first nurse injectors in the industry.
Blessed to work with top dermatologists and plastic surgeons from 2001 to 2006, she received training opportunities nationally. She learned the intricacies of replacing facial volume with an innate artistic injection technique.
Yone Tierney relocated to Minnesota to continue practicing facial aesthetics; in 2008, she found her opportunity with Skin Speaks and local leading dermatologist, Dr. Carney, a venture that has proven to be invaluable for all. Within the first two months at Skin Speaks, Yone became recognized as the Twin Cities leading provider of Sculptra, the volumizing/dermal filler product offering full facial enhancement and long-term results.
Yone provides Botox, Dysport, Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane, Radiesse, Silikon, and Sculptra treatment in a full-time capacity in our cosmetic office.
Yone’s future plans, alongside Dr. Carney, are to become more active teaching other physicians and injection specialists specific techniques to achieve beautiful results with Sculptra.

Since 2005, Emily has been providing laser treatments, permanent makeup, and aesthetic services at Skin Speaks. Working with a leading dermatologist, Emily has extensive knowledge of skincare and skin health.
With years of experience and certifications from the National Laser Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona, Emily has confidently performed hundreds of Fraxel, Pulsed Dye laser (Vbeam), IPL, and Diode laser treatments.
Trained in permanent makeup under Susan Church in Costa Mesa California at the International Institute of Permanent Cosmetics, additional training in Dallas Texas, and several local apprenticeships, Emily is Skin Speaks permanent makeup artist. Her treatment options include the application of eyebrows, eyeliner, lip liner, full lip color, areola reconstruction and scar camouflage.

Shae Kramer completed laser training and certifications in Scottsdale, Arizona at the National Laser Institute. For two years prior to joining Skin Speaks Spa M.D. staff, Shae provided laser treatments exclusively and is experienced in with the Vbeam Pulsed Dye Laser, Diode, ND Yag, IPL, fractional resurfacing, Fraxel, non-invasive skin tightening,Thermage, and others.
