About Advancements in Dermatology and Skin Speaks Spa M.D.

Advancements in Dermatology and Skin Speaks Spa M.D. are owned and supervised by Patrick S. Carney, M.D., fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeon and board certified dermatologist, and "Top Doc" by Mpls/St.Paul magazine.

Dr. Carney graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Southern Methodist University in 1976. He completed his medical training at the University of Texas in Dallas and pursued a career initially in emergency medicine for three years.

Dr. Carney completed his residency at the Case Residency Reserve in Cleveland Ohio and subsequently moved to Minnesota where he completed a Fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery in 1987.

He is a Board Certified dermatologist. Dr. Carney belongs to the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

With over 20 years of skin care expertise Dr. Patrick S. Carney offers 4 full-service Advancements In Dermatology clinics throughout the Twin Cities. In 2003, he introduced the Twin Cities' premiere medical spa, Skin Speaks Spa M.D.


Dr. Whitney D. Tope, M. Phil., M.D.

Dr. Tope graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from Duke University with a BS degree in Biology in 1984 and Duke University School of Medicine in 1988.  During medical school he spent a year performing immunology research at the University of Cambridge (UK) earning a Master of Philosophy degree in Biochemistry. 

After medical school, Dr. Tope completed a general internal medicine internship at the University of Washington in Seattle, then returned to Duke University for his dermatology residency training (1992).  Dr. Tope’s training continued with fellowships in Advanced Dermatologic Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland and in Clinical and Research Laser studies at Harvard Medical School’s Wellman Center for Photomedicine. 

Dr. Tope then spent 10 years in academic dermatology, directing patient care, performing research, and teaching laser and dermatologic surgery at the University of Minnesota (1996-2003) and the University of California – San Francisco (2003-2006).  He has taught medical students, residents, and fellows all aspects of dermatologic surgery.  Many of these physicians are now dermatologists and dermatologic surgeons practicing in the Twin Cities.  Dr. Tope returned to the Twin Cities to devote the remainder of his career to patient care and research in dermatologic, laser, and cosmetic surgery, joining Dr. Patrick Carney at Advancements in Dermatology and Skin Speaks Spa MD in December, 2007.

A board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Tope is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, American College of Mohs Surgery, and American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.


Dr. J. Michael Carney, M.D

Dr. Carney is board certified in dermatology and fellowship trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a specialized method of treating skin cancer. Utilizing Mohs surgery, Dr. Carney can achieve the highest cure rate while saving the maximum amount of normal skin. He has been performing Mohs surgery for 22 years, since his fellowship in 1984.

Dr. Carney graduated Magna Cum Laude from Duke University. His twelve years of formal medical training began at Northwestern University, where he received the highest honors, Alpha Omega Alpha. He followed this with a General Surgery internship in Michigan and a three-year Dermatology residency in Cleveland. He extended his training with four fellowships: Laser Surgery at Harvard Medical School; Mohs Micrographic Surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical School; and two fellowships in Cosmetic Surgery in Arkansas.

He enjoys lecturing and teaching, and divides his time between private practice in Little Rock, Arkansas and his Mohs practice with Advancements in Dermatology in Edina.


Dr. Kelly Jerstad, MD

Dr. Jerstad graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine, Alpha Omega Alpha. She interned at Northwestern University, in Illinois and had a four year Dermatology residency at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Jerstad extended her training by obtaining a Fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery with a procedural emphasis on ablative and nonablative laser techniques; use of vascular, pigment and hair removal lasers; chemical peels; liposuction, sclerotherapy; Botox; Fat Transfer; and filler substances.

Dr. Jerstad is board certified in dermatology and splits her time between a group practice where she is a partner in South Dakota and her Mohs practice with Advancements in Dermatology in Edina.


Risa Dorweiler, NP

Risa Asmus Dorweiler  C-A.N.P., Certified Adult Nurse Practitioner received her undergraduate degree in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of St. Benedict in 1992.  

She received her Master’s/Graduate degree with honors from the College of St. Catherine in 1999.  During her studies she completed numerous specialized internships including an elective dermatology rotation.  Prior to her Dermatology career, Risa specialized in Internal Medicine and Oncology.

She re-entered the field of dermatology in 2005 when she received specialized training injecting botox and dermal fillers, Risa joined Advancements in Dermatology and Skin Speaks Spa M.D in 2006, where she has the opportunity to treat patients both medically and cosmetically. Risa’s passion and interest for full-spectrum dermatology is recognizable and respected. You may find Risa available for treatment in any of our dermatology clinics as well as our full-service medical spa.

Risa has advanced training experience in Botox Cosmetic, Juvederm, Radiesse, Restylane, Silikon, and Lipodissolve treatments. 

Risa is a member and certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the Minnesota Board of Nursing and a current member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants.


Jacalyn J. Beiler, MPAS, PA-C, Certified Physician Assistant, has been with Advancements in Dermatology since early 2007.  She earned her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from Chicago Medical School, Rosalind Franklin University in North Chicago, IL in 2005. 

She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota, Duluth with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Mathematics graduating Cum Laude as well as University and Departmental Honors.  She spent one of her undergraduate years studying at the University of Birmingham in Birmingham, England. 
 
Jacalyn is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants; She is licensed by the Minnesota State Medical Board and an active member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants.

Larry Weidell, PA-C, Certified Physician Assistant, graduated with honors from Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska in 2001.  As a student, Larry was actively involved in the John Kerbs PA Student Society and served as an elected class representative to the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.  In 2001, Larry was awarded the Nebraska PA Foundation Scholarship.

Since becoming a PA, Larry continues to be consistently involved in the PA profession.  From 2001 to 2007, he was a Scholarship Selection Committee member for the PA Foundation, the philanthropic division of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.  Larry is an active fellow member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants.

Q&A: What is a Physician Assistant?


Cynthia Anderson, Physician Assistant, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Concordia College in 1994 with a BA degree in Biology. She went on to earn her Masters of Physician Assistant Studies from The University of Iowa in 1997.

She joins Advancements in Dermatology with 3 years of previous experience in Dermatology and over 10 years total in practice as a Physician Assistant. Her previous specialties included Cardiothoracic Surgery and Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. Cynthia provides a wide spectrum of medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology services at our new Coon Rapids location.

Cynthia has completed advanced training courses on Botox, dermal fillers, and laser therapies. She enjoys continued training through conferences and Physician mentors, and is currently working toward obtaining recognition as a Diplomate of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants.

Angela Rogers, MPAS, PA-C

Angela Rogers completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 2005 with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Psychology.  She graduated with collegiate honors; cum laude and received the E.W. Bohannon Merit Scholarship of Academic excellence in Exercise Science, Major of the Year award.

She earned her graduate degree, Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies, from Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center in June 2008.  Advanced training also includes hematology and oncology, geriatrics, general and cardiothoracic surgery, and psychiatry.  During her studies she served as class vice president and completed her master’s degree research in current strategies in wrinkle prevention and reduction. 

Angela is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and licensed by the Minnesota State Medical Board.  She is an active member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Minnesota Academy of Physician Assistants, and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants.

With specialized training in dermatology, Angela is licensed and qualified to perform comprehensive dermatological examinations, diagnose, treat, and prescribe appropriate medical therapy for management of patients’ overall skin health.  She is skilled in performing various procedures that include shave and punch biopsies, surgical excisions, cryotherapy, dermal fillers, and Botox for both cosmetic use and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).  She consults regularly regarding cosmetic procedures and is always willing to entertain questions and give recommendations accordingly.  Since joining Advancements in Dermatology, she continues to extend her training and experience in the field of dermatology.

Along with skin health, she has a passion for overall health and well-being.  She has shown this through sharing her knowledge and training others as a certified Stott Pilates instructor, ACE personal trainer, and NETA group fitness instructor.  Angela also maintains her Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Healthcare Provider CPR & AED certifications through the American Heart Association.

Angela is passionate about people.  Her outside interests include; gathering with family and friends, dancing, water and snow sports, and outdoor activities.

Q&A: What is a Physician Assistant?


Ann-Marie Orth is a Registered Nurse with a baccalaureate in Science in Nursing from the University of Minnesota.  She began her career as a medical surgical nurse on a cardiac/stroke step down unit at United Hospital in St. Paul.  She joined Advancements in Dermatology and Skin Speaks Spa M.D.  in July of 2007, eager to combine her medical skills and her passion for aesthetic medicine.

Ann Marie is part of our medical surgery team, assisting our surgeons in skin cancer  (Mohs) surgery several days a week.  Her independent role within our clinic is to provide cosmetic services.  She is a skilled and qualified provider of Botox injections, dermal fillers, and a cosmetic consultant of the aesthetic services we offer.

Ann-Marie is licensed by the Minnesota State Board of Nursing and is an active member of the Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA), and the Association for Medical Esthetic Nurses (AMEN), a recognized nursing affiliate of the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine.

Ann-Marie is very active and accomplished in pursuing advanced trainings for Botox and dermal fillers provided by AAI (Aesthetic Advancements Inc.), Bioform medical , Artes Medical, and Allergan, consistently expanding and perfecting her treatment techniques.


Kathy Larson PA-C, is a Certified Physician Assistant. She received her Graduate Training in Physician Assistant studies from the Weill Medical College of Cornell University at the New York Presbyterian Hospital in 2000. She also had the opportunity to do an elective dermatology rotation at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. 

She earned her undergraduate degree from Saint Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelors of Arts in Biology in 1996. 

Kathy is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She is licensed by the Minnesota State Board of Medical Examiners and is an active member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants and the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Yone Tierney, RN, B.S.N., B.A.

Yone Tierney is the newest addition to the Skin Speaks Spa M.D. team.

Trained at the groundbreaking Skinklinic in Manhattan as one of the first nurse injectors in the industry, Yone had the opportunity to work with top dermatologists and plastic surgeons from 2001 to 2006.

Because of her opportunities to train nationally with specialists, she was able to learn the intricacies of replacing facial volume with an innate artistic injection technique. A lifelong interest in facial aesthetics and being at the right place at the right time has created a career that has proven to be invaluable.

In just over two months at Skin Speaks Spa M.D, Yone has become the Twin Cities' leader in Sculptra.


Jeanne Jellison, CLT, Medical Esthetician

Jeanne Jellison is an accomplished medical aesthetician and certified laser technician who has over ten years of experience in the medical aesthetics and skin care industry.

Jeanne first worked for a plastic surgery group and a family practice, and has been with Advancements in Dermatology and Skin Speaks Spa M.D. since the medical spa opened in 2003. She is certified by the NCLE and is fluent in the physics and applications of dermatologic laser equipment.

Jeanne has experience treating patients with Vbeam Pulsed Dye Laser, ND Yag laser, IPL (intense pulsed light), Reliant’s Fraxel Laser Technology, Diode laser for hair removal, and Thermage radio-frequency treatment for skin tightening and toning.

Working side by side with Dr. Patrick Carney for nearly 6 years, Jeanne is an exceptional resource and provider of skin care treatments.


Emily Goedtel, CLT, Medical Esthetician, Permanent Makeup artist

Emily Goedtel is a Medical Aesthetician, Permanent Makeup Artist, and Certified Laser Technician.

She trained for permanent makeup under Susan Church in Costa Mesa California at the International Institute of Permanent Cosmetics. Since then she has furthered her expertise in permanent makeup by doing additional training in Dallas, Texas, as well as local apprenticeships. She is well versed in the application of eyebrows, eyeliner, lipliner, full lip color, areola reconstruction and scar camouflage.

Shae Kramer completed laser training and certifications in Scottsdale, Arizona at the National Laser Institute. For two years prior to joining Skin Speaks Spa M.D. staff, Shae provided laser treatments exclusively and is experienced in with the Vbeam Pulsed Dye Laser, Diode, ND Yag, IPL, fractional resurfacing, Fraxel, non-invasive skin tightening,Thermage, and others.
