About Fraxel Dual Resurfacing Laser
The Fraxel Dual is the leading and only technology considered a pigment solution for patients suffering from melasma and significant sun damage.
The Fraxel Restore component is upgraded on this system to provide a more effective, faster, resurfacing treatment, and provides built in cooling system during treatment. Fraxel Restore is still the leading treatment for acne scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, an overall resurfacing tool.
What is different between the new Fraxel re:store Dual and our other Fraxel re:store?
The NEW Fraxel re:store Dual is a combination of the 1550nm laser (which is what our previous Fraxel re:store used), and a new 1927nm laser, called thulium, the only laser with this wavelength.
Improvements in the newer Fraxel 1550nm include:
25% Faster Treatment Times
More Comfort
The new handpiece has a built-in Zimmer Cooling Device working simultaneously during your treatment
Groundbreaking pigment eradication – 1927nm, referred to as Thulium, eliminates pigmentation.
Thulium safely treats all skin types and all areas of the body Melasma, sun damage, actinic keratosis, hyper-pigmented lesions. It is thought that it will be more effective in treating melasma as it produces minimal heat compared to other laser systems.
Many patients wish that they could treat face, neck, and chest and have all areas looking their best at the same time post treatment. The Fraxel Dual offers a comfortable treatment experience requiring little topical anesthesia for the 1927nm laser, allowing you to be treated for large/multiple surface areas in a single session.
Superfical resufacing (similar to a superficial CO2 laser resurfacing without downtime or wound care!). It is partially ablative, partial non-ablative. When used simultaneously with the 1550nm laser, you get more effective resurfacing – a superficial and deep resurfacing – leading to less treatments for the same result.
Safe for all skin types and all body surfaces.
What can this laser do?
FDA indications include treatment of pigmented lesions, acne scars, melasma, mild to moderate periorbital rhytids (wrinkles), surgical scars and actinic keratosis. Providers have been using the 1550 nm restore for stretch marks, burns, improvement in pore size with great results. The benefit of both 1550 and 1927 wavelenghts in a single treatment make improvements to the skin’s appearance both faster and more effective.
Can you explain fractional resurfacing?
Fractional laser resurfacing is treating a fraction of the skin with the laser and leaving the majority of the skin unaffected. Typically 20-35% of the skin is treated with microthermal zones (MTZ’s). These MTZ’s are columns of tissue heated by the laser that are about 1/10′th the diameter of a hair. By treating only a portion of the skin, downtime and risks are minimized, however treatment depths can be higher. This leads to more effective treatments. The 1550nm laser is an Erbium laser, which is a rather "cold" laser. It causes very little “peripheral or surface” damage when creating microthermal zones. It just heats the tissue. This is referred to as non-ablative resurfacing.
In contrast, the CO2 laser vaporizes tissue (removes tissue) which is ablative resurfacing, leaving wounded surface tissue that requires significant healing or recovery time. Non-ablative resurfacing will require multiple treatments, and will have minimal downtime.
For pigmentation, can I do IPL and Fraxel Dual?
In the few months that we have provided the Fraxel Dual Thulium treatment, we have found it to be spectacular for deep tissue pigmentation concerns (melasma), as well as skin textural improvement. For many patients, they have combination issues with sun damage and deeper tissue pigmentation concerns, we are offering the combination of a pass of IPL followed by Fraxel Dual, achieving beautiful results. We refer to this combination treatment as "Beauty with Benefits".
What can I expect after the 1927 Thulium treatment?
You will have pinkness and mild swelling for about 3 days. There is no wound care, no dressing. Your skin will feel dry and we encourage you to keep it well hydrated through the healing process. After a few days your skin will bronze and feel rough. It is about to peel at this time, and the peeling will take about 3 days to complete. Your skin will then look very refreshed and pink and will return to its natural color in about 5-10 days. By day 10, you will look like you have make up or powder on because of the beautiful uniform color of your skin.
